Don't make the mistake of thinking that once you have set up an organisation, and if necessary found premises for it, the hard work is over: nothing could be further from the truth – that was the easy part - now the hard work begins! Managing an organisation is a huge task but nevertheless very rewarding. Our Online Guidance and Advice is designed to make the process of managing easier for you whether you have premises or not.
Whilst the whole of our On Line Guidance and Advice is in essence geared to 'managing an organisation' in this guide we focus particularly on good practice. We recognise that the business of running committee meetings can be a bit daunting for a newly formed organisation or a new trustee, so we have provided some documents that cover this. If you are a newly appointed trustee or, have been a trustee for sometime, but want to check on your roles and responsibilities then our guide on 'Trustee Roles' will help here.
If you are a Community Association, or thinking of becoming one, see our 'Introduction to Community Association Constitutions' this and our notes on 'Affiliated Groups and Sections' and 'Community Association Membership' are specifically geared to Community Associations. However, if you are a Community Association and don’t know what an affiliated group or section is then you definitely need to read it!
All organisations should have a Business Plan – don’t be put off the term Business Plan. Put simply a business plan is:
Budget + Activities programme + Procedures for Action = Business Plan
Often when organisations are short of funds or need to economise the first thing they cut is their training budget. This can be a short-sighted move as people i.e. staff and volunteers are the greatest resource an organisation has. 'The Need for Training' looks at when and why organisations should undertake training.
Getting your organisation noticed is key to its survival and today much can be done by the click of a mouse. 'Computers and the Internet' included in the 'Managing your organisation' guide can help with ways of using the internet and you might also like to look at our guide on 'Marketing and Networking'.
Finally, if the occasion does arise (and we certainly hope it won’t) we cover how to dissolve an organisation in our 'Closing a Charity' and 'Closing a Company' notes.
